More and more people are both leaving their local area (commune) and crossing a cantonal border on their way to work. Some cantons are employment hubs and so see high numbers of inbound commuters, while in others the number of outbound commuters exceeds those commuting in. Basel-Stadt and Zug attract a particularly high number of commuters for their size. In absolute terms, however, the canton of Zurich has the highest net commuter balance. In 2024, people commuting into the area outnumbered those commuting out by 73 000. This figure does not include international cross-border commuters.
