Revenue from accommodation in the hotel sector (HESTA-Mon)
Presentation and objective
The FSO's Tourist Accommodation Statistics (HESTA) monitor various aspects of the Swiss hotel industry, including fluctuations in demand. The primary indicator is overnight stays. In complement, the HESTA-Mon experimental statistics were developed to provide insights into hotel sector revenue and access to data that is important for both the Swiss tourism sector and for many political and economic actors.
This webpage lists total revenue and revenue per overnight stay from hotel accommodation in Switzerland by star rating or geographical location as defined by Switzerland Tourism. It also provides a comparison with the previous year for each variable and period (calendar year, winter tourist season, summer tourist season).
HESTA-Mon statistics are released twice a year. The April publication presents the final results for the previous year, i.e. for the winter tourist season (November to April), summer tourist season (May to October) and the previous calendar year. The results published in September are provisional results for the current year’s winter tourist season.
The HESTA-Mon results should be interpreted with careful attention to the confidence intervals, which provide important context to avoid overinterpretation. These intervals are sometimes still relatively large when it comes to estimating percentage change between two periods. Work is underway to reduce the intervals.

Methodology
Summary
HESTA statistics are based on an exhaustive monthly survey. Most of the data is collected directly from hotels. In order to be able to estimate total accommodation revenue and revenue per overnight stay, an experimental extrapolation procedure is used for the treatment of nonresponse.
1. In the first stage, the non-response mechanism is modelled using the homogeneous response group method with the auxiliary variables described in the methodological note “HESTA-Mon: Revenu sur l’hébergement dans le secteur hôtelier, Pondération et estimation de variance”. Within the homogeneous response groups, weights are calculated to correct for non-response.
2. A calibration is then carried out using the CALMAR procedure. The auxiliary variables used for this purpose are described in the methodological note “HESTA-Mon: Revenu sur l’hébergement dans le secteur hôtelier, Pondération et estimation de variance”.
This weighting procedure is carried out for each month of the survey. To generate seasonal or annual indicators, the monthly weighted estimates are then aggregated. This procedure also makes it possible to calculate indicators showing the change between two periods. The approach therefore entails a complex variance estimation procedure, which is also explained in the methodological note “HESTA-Mon: Revenu sur l’hébergement dans le secteur hôtelier, Pondération et estimation de variance”. A supplementary note, “HESTA-Mon: Revenu sur l’hébergement dans le secteur hôtelier, Estimation des évolutions” provides a detailed description of the change and variance estimation methods."
