Sustainable development
Topics
Overview
Sustainable development seeks to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own, while protecting the environment and ensuring that no one is left behind. It encompasses a broad range of issues, including poverty, health, education, equality, innovation, employment, economic growth, climate change, biodiversity, and justice and peace.
Because sustainable development is complex and multi‑faceted, measuring it requires a systemic approach in which each indicator illustrates a different aspect of sustainable development. By observing these indicators over time, we can see if we are moving in the direction of sustainable development.
The FSO's indicator systems for monitoring sustainable development are implemented at cantonal and municipal level through the Cercle Indicateurs and at national level through MONET 2030. At global level, the set of indicators developed by the UN provides information on progress towards the 2030 Agenda.
