Survey on life experiences and safety

The survey examines levels of personal safety among adults in Switzerland. It aims to produce statistics on safety in various settings (such as public spaces, the home, online and in the workplace) and among different population groups. Reliable data is needed to monitor social development in Switzerland and to guarantee a high quality of life and high levels of safety.

The survey is conducted by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on behalf of the Federal Council. The DemoSCOPE survey institute has been contracted by the FSO to carry out the online survey and telephone interviews.

The invitation to complete the questionnaire is addressed to the selected individual. Only this person may respond to the survey. It is very important to complete the questionnaire on your own without anyone else present.

Your participation in the survey is very important. The results will only be reliable if the questionnaire is completed by a large proportion of those selected. However, taking part in the survey is voluntary.

The survey is aimed at people aged 18–74 who live in Switzerland. People are selected at random from the sample register of the Federal Statistical Office (FSO). The FSO's sample register is based on the official residents' registers of the cantons and communes.

The Federal Statistical Office (FSO) obtained your address from its sample register, which uses data from the residents' registers of the communes and cantons. The residents' registers record the basic data of everyone residing in Switzerland.

The Federal Statistics Act and the Federal Statistics Ordinance form the legal basis for the Survey on Life Experiences and Safety.

Data protection is ensured in accordance with the Federal Statistics Act and the Data Protection Act.Personal data (e.g. name, address, telephone number) is stored separately from survey data and deleted upon completion of the survey process.

The Federal Statistical Office (FSO) only publishes completely anonymised data from which it is impossible to draw any conclusions about the circumstances of a particular individual.

Employees of the FSO and the DemoSCOPE research institute are bound by professional secrecy..

The results will be published at the end of 2028 on the website of the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
