Population change and vital statistics in 2024: provisional figures

The population passed the 9 million mark in 2024. On 31 December, Switzerland had 9 048 900 permanent residents. Fertility fell for the third year in a row. The average number of children per woman is at an all-time low. The number of deaths remained stable and life expectancy continues to rise. Immigration fell sharply after a record year in 2023, while emigration has risen.
