In 2025, Switzerland had a total of 2259 km of national roads. These are road networks of national importance, which are generally built, operated and maintained by the federal government.
In 2025, the national road network comprised around 1549 km of motorways with four or more lanes, 440 km of semi-motorways with two or three lanes, and 270 km of mixed-traffic roads. Mixed-traffic roads are also used by cyclists and pedestrians.
The length of the national road network increased significantly in 2020 when a federal decree incorporated almost 400 km of cantonal roads into the national road network.
