Fatally injured persons by main modes of transport

By far the highest number of fatalities occurs on roads. However, roads also see the highest volumes of traffic. After reaching a peak in the 1970s, the number of road deaths fell steadily until around 2016 but has since remained roughly stable.

In the rail sector, almost all fatalities in recent years have involved railway staff and members of the public (for example, when crossing level crossings). Virtually no passengers have been killed in rail accidents. Suicides are not included in these accident statistics.

The number of aviation fatalities has fluctuated by comparison, as the number of deaths can increase sharply in a given year, particularly when there are accidents involving large passenger aircraft.
