Public transport performance by transport means

In Switzerland, railway transport performance exceeds that of all other means of public transport. In 2025, 23.7 billion person-kilometres were travelled by rail, the highest figure ever recorded. One person-kilometre equates to one person transported over a distance of one kilometre. There was a marked increase in rail transport performance between 2000 and 2010 especially. This decade of growth was the result of extensive infrastructure investments, notably the Rail 2000 project, which expanded services to offer more frequent connections and shorter journey times. After 2010, growth in rail transport performance continued, albeit at a more moderate pace. A pronounced but temporary decline in transport performance was observed across most means of transport between 2020 and around 2022, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.
