The social protection scheme is the observation unit of the Total Social Security Accounts. In principle, a scheme corresponds to a separate set of rules which regulate how social benefits are paid out and funded. These provisions are typically in the form of laws, ordinances or collective agreements. A scheme achieves its aim thanks to one or several institutional units which are charged with allocating the benefits to the entitled recipients. For example, the occupational pension plan is based on many pension funds.
