Repetition rate

Integration indicator

This indicator shows the repetition rate among pupils in years 3 to 8 of primary education. It corresponds to the proportion of pupils who have to repeat a school year in the same class because they have not reached the level required to go up into the next year.

From an integration perspective, a decline in the repetition rate indicates an improvement in the situation.

Key findings: Pupils of foreign nationality, whether born abroad or in Switzerland, are the most likely to repeat a year. Children of Swiss nationality born in Switzerland have the lowest repetition rate, while Swiss nationals born abroad have an intermediate rate.

Trends over time: The repetition rate fell in all population groups between the cohort of pupils that started the 3rd year in 2011 and those who started in 2017. The decline was more pronounced among pupils born abroad for both foreign and Swiss nationals. However, a slight increase in rates can be observed among foreign-born foreigners between the 2016 and 2017 cohorts.
