Revenue from motorised road traffic

Revenue from motorised road traffic
In 2023, the public sector ‒ the Confederation, cantons and communes ‒ collected CHF 8.5 billion in taxes and charges from motorised road transport. Around half of this (49%) came from petroleum taxes, and just over a quarter (28%) from cantonal motor vehicle taxes. Other sources of revenue included the heavy goods vehicle charge, vehicle taxes and the national highways charge (motorway tax sticker/vignette). Revenue from the petroleum tax stood at CHF 4.2 billion in 2023, around 2% lower than the previous year and 17% lower than in 2010.
