Commuters per commute

In 2024, around 71% of commuters worked outside of their home commune, many outside of their home canton (20% of all commuters work outside of their home canton). These inter-communal and inter-cantonal commuters contrasted with the 29% who worked in their local area (intra-communal commuters). These are people who leave their residential building but stay in their home commune for work. Over the past three decades, the proportion of commuters who work in a different commune or canton has increased.

Note: In the transport statistics, a commuter is defined as any person in employment whose fixed place of work is not their own dwelling, regardless of whether the commute is within the person’s local area (in Switzerland, this means their commune of residence). Using the conventional definition whereby a commuter is someone who works outside their local area would result in a lower number of commuters when communes merge.
