Commuters by main means of transport

In 2024, just over half of commuters (49%) used the car as the main means of transport for their commute. Some 31% used public transport to go to work, while 18% travelled by foot or by bike.

The shares of the various means of transport have remained fairly stable since 1990. The most notable change is the growing importance of rail transport between 2000 and 2010. This increase reflects major investments in the national rail network, particularly through the Rail 2000 project and expansion of regional commuter rail services.

Note: Where a commuter uses several means of transport on their way to work, the main means of transport is determined by ranking the different means: public transport takes precedence over private transport, and faster modes take precedence over slower ones. If a person uses first the train and then the bus, the train is considered to be the main means of transport.
