Of the CHF 161.9 billion in total costs for road, rail and air transport in 2023, more than half (54%) was attributable to costs associated with the means of transport. Environmental and health impacts accounted for 23% of the total costs, while maintenance and expansion of the transport infrastructure accounted for 13% and transport accidents 10%.
The environmental and health costs of transportation include, for example, costs associated with air pollution, noise, the impacts of climate change, and soil contamination caused by transport activities.
