Stock of passenger cars by fuel type

Stock of passenger cars by fuel type

Passenger vehicle stocks in Switzerland are still largely dominated by vehicles with internal combustion engines. In 2026, 66% of all cars ran on petrol and 24% on diesel (including standard hybrids). Purely electric cars accounted for 6% of the total, while plug-in hybrids accounted for 3%.

A look back at developments over the past few decades shows that until the early 2000s, almost all cars on Swiss roads ran on petrol. Petrol cars then gradually lost market share to diesel vehicles, whose share peaked at around 30% in 2019 and has been falling ever since. It is only in recent years that electric vehicles have been appearing on Swiss roads in significant numbers. The number of all-electric cars passed the 100 000 mark for the first time in 2022 and plug-in hybrids in 2024.
