Language
Knowledge of Switzerland's national languages is important to be able to participate in the labour market, and more broadly, to get to know people living in Switzerland. For foreign nationals, it is also a requirement for family reunification, to obtain a residence or settlement permit, and to benefit from ordinary or simplified naturalisation.

Hauptergebnisse
Key findings
People without a migration background generally have better skills in the Swiss national and local languages than those with a migration background. However, Swiss language skills improve among the second or subsequent generations of people with a migration background. Among the second or subsequent generations, the proportion of people who indicate a Swiss national language as their main language or who usually speak a local language at home is similar to that of the population without a migration background. In addition, regular use of at least two national languages is higher in second or subsequent generations than in other population groups.
