Costs und funding of motorised road transport

Of the CHF 92.3 billion in total costs for motorised road transport in 2023, more than half (57% or CHF 53.0 billion) were attributable to vehicle purchase and running costs. Environmental and health costs (22%), accident costs (12%) and infrastructure costs (9%) made up a much smaller proportion of the total.

Road users themselves bore the majority of the costs of motorised road transport (74%), while the general public bore CHF 22.5 billion in accident, environmental and healthcare costs.
