The busiest border point in 2021 was the Chiasso motorway crossing in Ticino, which recorded a daily average of 64 500 entries and exits. The next busiest border points were the Basel/St. Louis motorway crossing, which recorded 62 700 crossings, and Bardonnex near Geneva, which recorded 50 400 crossings.
Without exception, all major border crossings recorded markedly fewer entries and exits in 2021 than in the previous survey conducted in 2015. This decline is attributable to the COVID-19 pandemic, partly because in 2021 cross-border travel was in some cases subject to conditions such as proof of vaccination or a negative test result.
