Internal combustion‑engine vehicles still make up the majority of new passenger cars in Switzerland. In 2025, 153 729 newly registered cars (66%) ran on petrol or diesel (including conventional hybrids), 52 843 were all‑electric (23%) and 26 019 were plug‑in hybrids (11%).
A look back at developments over the past few decades shows that until shortly before the turn of the millennium, almost all new registrations in Switzerland ran on petrol. Petrol cars then gradually lost market share to diesel vehicles. New registrations of diesel cars peaked in 2016 at around 39% and have since fallen sharply. Electric cars and plug-in hybrids have been appearing on Swiss roads in significant numbers since around 2020.
