In 2023, motorised road transport generated total costs of CHF 92.3 billion ‒ nearly seven times more than rail transport (CHF 14.2 billion) and around ten times more than scheduled and charter air transport (CHF 10.3 billion) ‒ reflecting considerably higher traffic volumes on road networks.
Passenger transport accounted for just over three-quarters (77%) of transport costs, while goods transport accounted for just under a quarter (23%).
In addition to costs associated with transport means and infrastructure, transport costs include the cost of accidents and of transport-related damage in terms of the environment and health.
