Self-employed (legal definition)
A self-employed person according to the legal definition is the owner or co-owner of the unincorporated business in which they work (i.e. not a legal entity). They are self-employed and assume the financial risk. An employee in the family business who indicates that they are a member of the board of directors or senior management of the company is also considered to be self-employed.

Self-employed (sociological definition)
A self-employed person according to the sociological definition is the owner or co-owner of the business in which they work. In addition to self-employed persons who are owners or co-owners of their unincorporated business (self-employed according to the legal definition), this category includes employees who are owners or co-owners of their incorporated business (limited company or limited liability company).
