In 2025, excluding mopeds, around 6.6 million motorised road vehicles were registered for use on Swiss roads: 4.8 million passenger cars, 0.8 million motorcycles and 0.5 million goods vehicles.
Since 1980, the number of passenger cars has more than doubled, and the number of motorcycles has increased almost sixfold. Over the same period, the number of goods vehicles has roughly tripled, mainly due to increasing numbers of delivery vans. There have been fewer marked changes in the numbers of heavy goods vehicles.
Since 1980, the number of passenger vehicles increased twelvefold. This strong growth is mainly due to the fact that this relatively small group includes not only different types of buses but also motorhomes, which have seen a boom in recent years.
Mopeds are not recorded in the national vehicle register. Moped numbers are recorded separately and sent to the FSO by the cantons. At national level no distinction can be made between traditional mopeds and fast e‑bikes – which also require a moped licence plate – because many cantons record these two types of vehicle together. The number of mopeds fell steadily from the mid‑1980s until 2009. After that the numbers began to rise, reversing the trend. The reason for this is the e-bike boom.
