Of the total of 1.4 million take-offs and landings in civil aviation in 2024, just over two-thirds (68%) were classed as commercial and non-commercial general aviation, mostly using small aircraft. Scheduled and charter flights using larger passenger aircraft, which are mainly concentrated at the country’s three national airports, accounted for just under a third of flight movements.
In the early 2000s, the number of flight movements fell as a result of Swissair’s collapse and the terrorist attacks in New York. Since then, the figures have remained more or less constant – with the exception of a temporary decline during the COVID-19 pandemic.
