Public transport traffic volume by transport means

In Switzerland, 673 million passengers were transported by railways in 2025. (The remaining means of transport for this year will be published in December.) The overall figures for all means of transport for 2024 are as follows: Buses carried the largest number of public transport passengers, totalling 825 million, followed by railways (647 million), tramways (508 million), trolleybuses (261 million) and aerial cableways (207 million). Passenger numbers for rack railways and passenger vessels were much lower (13 million passengers each). Passengers who transferred during their journey were counted multiple times, except for those who transferred within the rail network. A pronounced but temporary decline was observed in passenger numbers on most means of public transport between 2020 and around 2022 owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.
