Cross-border passenger transport by border section

Cross-border passenger transport by border section

In 2021, an average of 1.21 million people crossed the border between Switzerland and its neighbouring countries by land each day. The vast majority of these entries and exits – 1.16 million – were by road. A total of 0.06 million border crossings were recorded per day by rail.

Compared with the last survey in 2015, the number of border crossings by road transport fell by 46% and rail transport border crossings by 32%. This decline is attributable to the COVID-19 pandemic, partly because in 2021 cross-border travel was in some cases subject to conditions such as proof of vaccination or a negative test result.

In terms of road traffic, the border with France was the most crossed border in 2021, with an average of 0.5 million entries and exits recorded each day. This was followed by the German border (0.3 million) and the Italian border (0.2 million).
