22.11.2024 - In 2023, 37.4 million cubic metres of water were used for irrigation in Swiss agriculture. The cantons using the greatest volume of water were Valais (13.9 million m3), Vaud (4.3 million m3) and Bern (3.6 million m3). The irrigated area totalled 34 200 hectares, representing 3.3% of the total utilised agricultural area. Most of the water was used for grassland (12.8 million m3), vegetables (9.4 million m3) and fruit (5.3 million m3). These are some of the many findings of the 2023 Farm Census, produced by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
