In 2025, there were an average of 535 passenger cars per 1000 inhabitants in Switzerland. This varies from region to region. Particularly in cantons with large urban agglomerations and a dense public transport network, the level of motorisation is considerably below the Swiss average. In 2025, for example, only 403 cars per 1000 people were registered in the canton of Geneva, and in Basel-Stadt the figure was as low as 306.
Until around 2016, the level of motorisation was on the rise across Switzerland as a whole. Since then, a slight downward trend has been observed.
