In 2025, transport by road, rail, air and water consumed a total of 298 190 terajoules of energy. Apart from the pandemic-related decline between 2020 and 2022, energy consumption in the transport sector has remained more or less constant since 2000.
Transport meets most of its energy needs with petroleum products: in 2024, 36% of consumption was accounted for by petrol, 30% by diesel and 26% by aviation fuels. Electricity accounted for 5%, with consumption by public transport (road and rail) remaining significantly higher than that of private road transport.
